Build Surface Completion
Updated: Jan 23, 2020
I purchased some 28 gauge galvanized sheet metal to cover the work bench. This will provide a perfect surface for the magnetic building system from Airfield Models.
I also purchased and cut to fit a sheet of 1/4 inch MDF. I added the MDF to smooth out the little ripples in the top of the bench. Since I built the workbench without a table saw it had some slight waves to it (think of a small sin/cosin wave. The sheet of MDF sits on the tops of all the waves resulting in a flatter surface.
The sheet metal lays pretty flat on the MDF on its own but it did have a few waves in it. So I decided to glue it up with some 3M 77 spray adhesive. This worked ok. There were a few spots that I had to treat afterwards. If I ever have to do it again I’ll glue it up with contact cement as that is a lot stronger.
Overall I’m pleased with the result as it is almost perfectly flat. It is a large work surface that should meet my needs for years and years to come.
Time to build something.
